New Brunswick pioneer in sustainable aquaculture wins 2009 New Brunswick BioSciences Achievement Award

September 22, 2009
Fredericton, NB - Dr. Thierry Chopin of UNBSJ was the proud winner of this year's New Brunswick BioSciences Achievement Award. The Award celebrates outstanding contributions to the local and/or global scientific community and/or socio-economic improvements through bio-science, by a New Brunswick bio-scientist. As well, the evaluation criteria account for the candidate's collegiality and leadership. For 2009, a panel of six esteemed judges from New Brunswick's bio-science community evaluated ten exceptional candidates from the areas of bio-medical, marine, and environmental sciences for the Bio-Sciences Achievement Award. The Award was presented by the Honourable Victor Boudreau, Minister of Business New Brunswick, at a luncheon, and this was followed by a colorful presentation by Dr. Chopin.

Dr. Thierry Chopin was born and educated in France. He obtained his Doctorate from the University of Western Brittany, Brest, France. He moved to Canada in 1989 and is presently a Professor in the Biology Department at the University of New Brunswick in Saint John. His work focuses on the ecophysiology and biochemistry of seaweeds of commercial value and the development of integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) systems for environmental sustainability (biomitigation), economic stability (product diversification and risk reduction) and societal acceptability (better management practices).

Dr. Chopin has published 76 refereed papers, 16 book chapters, 21 non-refereed publications, 252 abstracts (in 27 countries on 6 continents), 1 English/French DVD, and has had 314 contacts with the media (magazine articles, newspapers/radio/TV interviews and documentaries). Dr. Chopin is the Principal Investigator of the recently-launched multi-million dollar NSERC Canadian Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture Network (CIMTAN). He is Past President of the Aquaculture Association of Canada and of the Phycological Society of America, and current President of the International Seaweed Association. He is an advisor to the International Foundation for Science, in Stockholm, and a member of the Editorial Board of the journal Aquaculture International. Dr. Chopin is also Honorary Vice-Consul of France and Chevalier in the Ordre des Palmes Académiques of France.

Dr. Chopin and his colleagues have created an extraordinary awareness of balanced approaches to meeting human needs while respecting nature. This work was recently featured on the renowned Canadian series The Nature of Things, in a series hosted by the renowned environmentalist David Suzuki, and his daughter.
